Android-Based City Bus Tracking System

--Snehal A Demapure and S V Kulkarni

In today’s world, due to rapid increase in population, there is a need for efficient public transportation system, as the increased population increases the burden on public transportation like bus, etc. (Manini Kumbhar et al., 2015). The main objective of this paper is to carry out a research on city bus tracking in Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) using RS485 LAN, in order to make it much more efficient, reliable and less expensive. This research is not the only way to develop this kind of system and by no means suggested as the best solution, but it can definitely be one of the best alternatives we have today and can be used in many areas where there are no 3G, WiFi or other long-range wireless technologies available. This study will also help to understand the potential of city bus enquiry and make the bus commuter’s life easy. Till now, RS485 is being used as in-house or in-vehicle technology, but this study brings in the idea of using RS485 as communication tool for Inter-Vehicle and Vehicle to Infrastructure.

Mobile Learning and Evaluation: A New Paradigm of Teaching and Learning

--Kirti Panwar and Raj Kamal

Mobile device not only helps in communication and entertainment but also can be used for learning. The paper proposes a Mobile Learning and Evaluation System (MLES) which enables the teaching and evaluation process possible on the move. A user can learn the concepts of a specific subject and can also evaluate the learning of the subject using mobile device. Test includes the objective questions in the same pattern present in different examinations. MLES consists of three modules. The first module is for ‘learning’ the subject, the second module is for evaluation or test, and the third module is for checking the performance graphically in the form of bar chart. The paper presents the evolution of the idea for developing the MLES and MLES implementation. This MLES can be extended for use in learning different domains of engineering. MLES helps the students in preparing for examinations. A student self-learns and evaluates on the move without the help of teacher or any study material. MLES is tested with self-learning and test on students of digital design course. Students evaluate the acquired knowledge afterwards by attempting an objective type test.

E-Sign Detector: Image Steganography-Based Employee Identification System

--V Senthooran, M T Chathuranga and T Kartheeswaran

This paper aims to develop a desktop application system called E-Sign detector using image steganography. It targets to fulfill the requirements of small and medium size companies to identify their employers through a specially designed embedded picture employee ID card. This employee ID card will be able to track the employee when he/she is attempting to enter through a doorway of the company. Hence, this will be highly advantageous for small companies where it is needed to grant special privileges to a certain number of officers to enter a high defensive area. This application will be a real-time system with higher reliability that saves time and decreases the manpower usage and provides higher security. Through this system, the company can mark the time at which an employee is accessing a certain place and leaving that place, and maintain daily attendance automatically. Finally, we argue that the proposed system will be a good substitution for the replacement of manual employee identification system as we have implemented and solved the drawbacks found in a manual employee identification system.

A Comparison of Code Maintainability in Agile Environment

--Mary Adebola Ajiboye, Matthew Sunday Abolarin
and Johnson Adegbenga Ajiboye

The demand for quick delivery of quality software is becoming high among software clients due to the fast changing technology in the dynamic world. Agile software development meets this demand and has gained appropriate and wide acceptance among software practitioners. However, the quality of such software is greatly impacted by its maintainability. Unfortunately, existing works focused only on the flexibility aspect of maintainability without paying attention to timely delivery. In this work, maintainability as a function of time to correct codes was examined among various categories of software developers. Deliberate errors, ranging from two to nine, were introduced into sets of agile codes written in python programming language and given to 100 programmers, each in the groups of individual junior, individual expert, random, expert pairs, junior pairs and junior expert pairs. The results revealed that random pair programmers spent the highest time of 21.88 min/bug on the average, while individual experts spent the least time of 16.26 min/bug.

The Effect of ERP System on Organizational Performance: A Comparative Study

--Bharti Motwani and R K Sharma

High percentage of failure in information system projects caused a shift from individual development to standardized, prepackaged software solutions like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Companies were also discontinuing legacy software due to the technological demands of internal and external agencies. Besides, business process reengineering, cost reduction, taxation requirements, introduction of euro, increased sales, stock exchange requirements, innovation in information technologies and government funding-subsidization were also other reasons for ERP implementation. This paper throws light on the utility of ERP system in an organization. The study reveals that a positive effect was caused due to ERP systems on all the different factors related to organizational process.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs): The Changing Face of Banking in India

Bank Management
Information and communication technology has changed the way in which banks provide services to its customers. These days the customers are able to perform their routine banking transactions without even entering the bank premises. ATM is one such development in recent years, which provides remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the development of this self-service banking in India based on the secondary data.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is playing a very important role in the progress and advancement in almost all walks of life. The deregulated environment has provided an opportunity to restructure the means and methods of delivery of services in many areas, including the banking sector. The ICT has been a focused issue in the past two decades in Indian banking. In fact, ICTs are enabling the banks to change the way in which they are functioning. Improved customer service has become very important for the very survival and growth of banking sector in the reforms era. The technological advancements, deregulations, and intense competition due to the entry of private sector and foreign banks have altered the face of banking from one of mere intermediation to one of provider of quick, efficient and customer-friendly services. With the introduction and adoption of ICT in the banking sector, the customers are fast moving away from the traditional branch banking system to the convenient and comfort of virtual banking. The most important virtual banking services are phone banking, mobile banking, Internet banking and ATM banking. These electronic channels have enhanced the delivery of banking services accurately and efficiently to the customers. The ATMs are an important part of a bank’s alternative channel to reach the customers, to showcase products and services and to create brand awareness. This is reflected in the increase in the number of ATMs all over the world. ATM is one of the most widely used remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the growth of ATMs of different bank groups in India.
International Scenario

If ATMs are largely available over geographically dispersed areas, the benefit from using an ATM will increase as customers will be able to access their bank accounts from any geographic location. This would imply that the value of an ATM network increases with the number of available ATM locations, and the value of a bank network to a customer will be determined in part by the final network size of the banking system. The statistical information on the growth of branches and ATM network in select countries.

Indian Scenario

The financial services industry in India has witnessed a phenomenal growth, diversification and specialization since the initiation of financial sector reforms in 1991. Greater customer orientation is the only way to retain customer loyalty and withstand competition in the liberalized world. In a market-driven strategy of development, customer preference is of paramount importance in any economy. Gone are the days when customers used to come to the doorsteps of banks. Now the banks are required to chase the customers; only those banks which are customercentric and extremely focused on the needs of their clients can succeed in their business today.
